Marathon is a historic area near Athens. A place worth visiting is the Tomb of the Marathon. At this location, back in 490 BC, 192 Athenian soldiers under the orders of their king Leonidas fought against the Persians during their first invasion in ancient Greece, died and were buried there. The area is also the starting point of the 42 km Classic Marathon Race. It is worth visiting the Archaeological Museum and the Marathon Run Museum. It’s 3,100 exhibits record the history of the marathon road from 1896 till today. A unique sporting collection of the birthplace of the marathon road that you won’t find anywhere else.
